Launch of Seed
Filed under Active Ice, General, Programming by Brett Reid at 23:28pm December 15th, 2006Seed is a Content Management System I developed after building custom systems for many different clients over the years. I began looking at Joomla and Drupal this year as reusable tools. Those systems are very impressive but it would take quite a bit of hacking to suit our clients needs, especially if they had some arb request that we were limited by.
It started out as a need (in August) for a reusable CMS that we could offer to our clients at a monthly fee. It needed light, yet scalable, portable, robust and able to plug into any of our existing sites as well as adapt easily to any future sites. At that stage I hadn’t heard of CakePHP and thought of PHPMVC as too bulky for a small to medium sized sites that we do. I used an adapted framework similar to that on ActiveCollab and CakePHP.
George put together a slick logo and interface and came up with the name “Seed” (others were “Root”, “Node”). This Friday saw the second of our clients licensing Seed (Articles, News, Gallery modules) so let’s see how it goes.
