Stonewall’s 10th Birthday @ Madam Zingara
Filed under General by Brett Reid at 18:48pm June 12th, 2007I’ve had the opportunity to share quite a few social evenings with Stonewall+ as my girlfriend Jackie Ellse is their Art Director. They really are a cool group of people and one of very few web agencies I look up to in South Africa. Many know the previous Madam Zingara burnt down but it didn’t seem to stop them as they are back, bigger than ever in a circus tent on the Foreshore. I hadn’t heard any reports about this ‘new one’ and I’m glad.
For those who don’t know what I am on about, Madam Zingara is an extremely unique concept for a restaurant and they’ve grown from a small cosy restaurant with great food into a huge show held in a tent, still with great food. You can read more about them here.
The restaurant is within an authentic circus tent from the 1930’s. They seem to pack a huge amount of people in there and apparently it’s booked up 2 months in advance. Little things have been carried over from the previous restaurant. There are still hats but this time you’ll have to part with some silver if you want one. We were seated in the cubicles on the outer circle of the tent. As we were enjoying some drinks an announcer informed us that there would be entertainment in between each course.
After we’d finish our starters the show started. It really was awesome. There were circus performers from Argentina and Chile and I’ve heard that some of them are from the legendary Cirque du Soleil. Tricks were done without a safety net and some of the diners below jumped a bit each time they landed a trick. There was also 3 extremely fat black ladies who belted out hits from the 80’s to catchy beats. The vibe in the tent was really good.
We had the set menu for R300 a head which included a snack of breadsticks with various dips and creamy tomato soup. Our starters were Ravioli with creamy tomato sauce and rocket. For Mains we had their signature dish, the Chocolate Chilli steak and for Dessert we had a trio which included Granadilla Brulee, Tiramisu and Chocolate Brownie.
All in all a great evening and very highly recommended!
