Paul van Dyk in Cape Town

Last night we hit @mospheer in Landsdown and watched the legendary Paul van Dyk deliver the most memorable set I’ve experienced in a loooong time. I was a bit concerned about hitting the sweaty/tiger balm rubbing/poppers sniffing/freaks/neck massaging crowds again but Jackie, Warren and Damien and I ended up dancing until our feet were numb - it rocked!

Most people my age spent the mid nineties at parties like Pharcyde, Rise Up, Synergy etc listening to many of Paul van Dyk’s remixes and hits. I had a vinyl collection which included quite of few of his hits. Having the master behind the decks about 5m from you was something I was still getting over as we left the building. I could see pretty much everyone in the crowd was in awe. Some were zombified from the amount of drugs they were on but everyone just went off! The smell of sweat, the heat, the tiger balm, the weed, it was all there haha. It felt a bit wierd to be standing on the dance floor with a beer at an event like that but we partied just as hard :)

@mospheer really, really impressed me as a venue. I had never heard of it before but when I walked in you could instantly see this was the perfect layout for a club. This walkthrough doesn’t really show it too well. I was basically a huge dance floor (airconned) with chill areas right around it, apparently the toilets were great and I didn’t wait at the bar for more than 5 minutes. A far cry from the sweaty warehouses and green long drops of our era. I can recall attending a Synergy at the military base in Goodwood in mid 90’s with 4 warehouses, the main one was so packed that sweat was dripping from the ceilings - charming - but we had good time!

PvD was building up and then releasing some of the most devastating basslines my internal organs have experienced. Stomping/bouncing however you want to describe it - if this didn’t get you moving, nothing would. It was fun watching people too. At times some of the people standing on the side or up on the VIP ledge were standing still and then a baseline would start rolling and you’d see arms twitching, feet tapping and eventually they couldn’t hold back. Then there were e-babies everywhere, I was quite happy I was sober this time :) The freaks were definately there, I think I spotted a 50 year old man with tattoos and no shirt! But that is what seperates these sort of parties from others, anything goes. You can wear what ever you like, do whatever you want and dance however you want, everyone is just there to enjoy the music and the vibe. We certainly did!
